A strong earthquake struck the southern Japanese island of Kyushu, reportedly killing at least three people, injuring many more and causing houses to collapse in a town close to the epicenter, The Wall Street Journal informs.

The U.S. Geological Survey informed the magnitude-6.2 quake struck near Ueki, Japan. Several smaller aftershocks occurred shortly afterward. Moreover, it was reported that about 16,000 homes were left without electricity and 38,000 without gas.

The BBC's Japan Correspondent Rupert Wingfield-Hayes says the quake took place at a time when most people were at home.
