The cost of the mosque surpassed $160 million, and was funded by private donations. The mosque was unveiled on Wednesday, ahead of the Muslim holiday Eid al-Adha.
With Islam being the second largest religion in Russia, the opening of the mosque comes as a welcome sight for the 23 million Muslims currently living within the borders of the country. Approximately two million Muslims live in Moscow.
